'Ulysses' infra damage cost in Cagayan Valley nears P6-B close to 30 road sections impassable

Close to 30 road sections in Cagayan Valley became impassable Saturday due to massive flooding caused by the discharge of water from Magat Dam, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said.

A total of 29 road sections in the provinces of Cagayan and Isabela were impassable due to flooding, some of them sustained damage due to the impact of flood waters and landslides, the department said.

As of 7 a.m. Saturday, the department also reported that damage caused by the onslaught of typhoon Ulysses to infrastructure reached P5.914 billion. 

 “Also, water level at the Cagayan River is extremely high and is still rising,” the DPWH Region 2 said.

 Itawes Bridge in Sta. Barbara, Piat Cagayan along the Cagayan-Apayao Road was closed to traffic due to settlement of slab.

Multiple sections of the Tuguegarao Diversion Road; Cagayan Valley Road in Barangays Gosi, Libag, Amulung, Baybayog, including the Divisoria Road in Barangay Namabbalan; Santiago-Tuguegarao Road in Enrile, CAR-Tuguegarao Section in Tuguegarao City; and Cagayan Apayao Road were closed due to massive flooding. 

The Buntun Bridge over the swollen Cagayan River is also closed to traffic and limited only for frontliners and agencies providing health services. Abusag Overflow Bridge is also closed to traffic. 

A section of the Penablanca-Callao Cave Road was also closed except for one lane due to the collapsed retaining wall including the shoulder of its right lane pavement carriageway.

A section of the Penablanca-Callao Cave Road in Barnagy Tawi, Penablanca was also affected. Clearing operations are now under way. 

More road sections including those in Pared, Maraburab, Dummun, Gattaran, Alilinu sections are impassable. 

Sections of Baybayog-Baggao-Dalin-Sta. Margarita Road in Tuguegarao and Baggao also became impassable due to landslides. 

The Cabagaan-Sta. Maria Overflow Bridge in Isabela was submerged in more than six-meter deep flood. 

Other road sections that remain closed include Junction Logac -Lasam- Gagabutan Road (JLLGR) in Sitio Talat, Barangay Masi in Rizal, Cagayan; Alinguigan Section, Rugao Section, San Juan Section, Cabagan Section, and San Pablo Section in Daang Maharlika; and Ilagan-Delfin Albano-Mallig Road.

The Lalog Bridge along Luna-Aurora-Cauayan Provincial Road connecting Cauayan-Cabatuan Road and Siffu Detour Bridge along Santiago-Tuguegarao Road were also affected.

Meanwhile 22 more road sections in other parts of the country remained closed Saturday due to damages left by typhoon Ulysses. 

Ten road sections in Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), one in Region I, four in Region III, six in Region IV-A, and one in Region VIII remained impassable due to soil collapse, landslide, mudflow, debris flow, fallen trees and flooding. 

There are also seven road sections with limited access; one in CAR, one in Region II, two in Region III, one in Region IV-A and two in Region V due to flooding and scoured bridge approaches.
