Water service interruption may last until Sunday

Water service interruptions within some parts of Metro Manila may last until Sunday after the turbidity level of raw water in Ipo Dam rose due to Typhoon Ulysses.



In a text message, Jennifer Rufo, head for stakeholders communications office of Maynilad Water Services Inc., said as per the estimate of her company, its services “should return to normal by Sunday at the latest”.

Right now, 70 percent of Maynilad’s customers, or around 1 million service connections, are experiencing water service interruption days after Typhoon Ulysses hit Metro Manila.   



“So far, the turbidity level in the raw water from Ipo Dam has been improving, and we're gradually ramping up our water production. The service interruption schedules will gradually shorten over the next couple of days,” Rufo told Business Bulletin.



Turbidity refers to increased sediment concentrations in the raw water.



Maynilad areas that are experiencing water service interruption include Bacoor, Imus, Caloocan, Las Pinas, Pasay, Makati, Malabon, Navotas, Manila, Quezon City, Paranaque, Muntinlupa, and Rosario.



Meanwhile, Manila Water also issued its own water service interruption advisory for its customers in Marikina City, Pasig City, Antipolo, Cainta, Taytay, San Mateo, Rodriguez, Teresa and Morong.



"While we are trying to return the operation of our water supply facilities and reservoirs, reduced to no water supply pressure will be experienced by our customers," Manila Water said.



"This is due to the abnormal increase in the use of water supply, which is being used to clean up during the aftermath of Typhoon Ulysses,” it added.



Jeric Sevilla, Manila Water’s Head for Corporate Strategic Affairs Group, has not yet responded when asked how long the abnormal water service supply will last in these areas.
