Gov't agencies ready for typhoon rescue and relief operations

Concerned government agencies have been placed on "standby 24/7” and readied relief supplies and medicines as the country braces for the impact of typhoon Ulysses, Malacañang said Wednesday.

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque assured the government's disaster preparedness as he appealed to the public to cooperate with authorities to ensure their safety and protection.

"The Palace is closely monitoring the movement of typhoon Ulysses...Concerned agencies of the government are on standby 24/7 and have already prepositioned relief goods, supplies and medicines," Roque said.

He said the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council Operations Center remains in close coordination with all regional disaster risk reduction and management councils and local government units on the path of the typhoon.

He added the Palace has already suspended work in government offices and classes in public schools in Metro Manila, Regions II, III, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, V and Cordillera Administrative Region on Wednesday and Thursday.

"We leave the suspension of work for private companies, offices and schools to their respective heads’ discretion," he said.

Roque also appealed to residents living areas that will be affected by the storm to monitor and follow weather advisories and government announcements. The public is also advised to secure their house and vehicles, cooperate with authorities when an evacuation notice is issued.

The Palace official likewise asked the public to postpone travels to avoid getting stranded and stay indoors to avoid injuries from flying debris.

The tropical storm Ulysses has intensified into a typhoon  Wednesday, prompting authorities to raise storm alerts over Metro Manila and other provinces in Luzon. The typhoon, packing maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 195 km/h, is reportedly moving towards Quezon-Aurora area Wednesday.
