Fight for QF advantage goes down the wire

Phoenix Super LPG and Rain or Shine square off for a chance to clinch a twice-to-beat advantage in the final day of the PBA Philippine Cup eliminations at the Angeles University Foundation Sports and Cultural Center.

The Fuel Masters (7-3) need to win their 6:45 p.m. match with the Elasto Painters (6-4) in order to secure the No. 2 spot and the bonus going into the quarterfinal round of the PBA bubble which starts on Friday.

Things are complicated for the Elasto Painters as they may need the result of the other games slated on another four-game bill to possibly earn the twice-to-beat edge.

Meralco plays NorthPort at 1 p.m. while Magnolia tackles Blackwater at 4 p.m.

Like Rain or Shine, the two teams hold identical 6-4 cards.

Plenty of scenarios still remain, making the quarterfinal seedings more complexed.

But unofficial computations made by the Bulletin have TNT assured of a twice-to-beat since it had a superior quotient in all of the possible scenarios.

The Tropang Giga went 7-4 after Tuesday’s 80-74 loss to the Elasto Painters. Both Meralco and Magnolia are no longer sure of making the top four after they garnered inferior quotients in all scenarios.

That leaves ROS and two other 7-4 teams in defending champion San Miguel Beer and Alaska in precarious situation.

SMB, which rolled to a 120-99 win over NorthPort, can clinch the bonus in at least three scenarios while Alaska may need a Meralco loss to gain a twice-to-beat.

ROS can gain the incentive in at least three scenarios, with a possible fourth in the event that all seven teams after top seed Ginebra finish at 7-4. The Elasto Painters may need to beat the Fuel Masters by at least four points to qualify for the twice-to-beat.

A loss won’t mean that a twice-to-beat is no longer possible for Phoenix since there are two situations that may put the Fuel Masters in the top four, provided the margin of defeat against the Painters isn’t big.

NLEX, which fell short of the quarters, tries to end its stay in Smart Clark Giga City with a win against Terrafirma in the 10 a.m. opener. Monday’s overtime loss to Alaska and Rain or Shine’s win over TNT the following day put an end to the quest of NLEX (4-6) to make the quarters.
