Brace for tropical depression 'Ulysses' -- NDRRMC

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) urged the public Monday to prepare for another possible typhoon with tropical depression (TD) "Ulysses" inching closer to Bicol (Region 5) and Calabarzon (Region 4A), two regions which were battered by previous cyclones.

NDRRMC Executive Director Ricardo Jalad advised regional and local DRRM offices that may be affected by TD Ulysses to continue monitoring weather updates, disseminate early warning signals, and implement prescribed safety measures including pre-emptive evacuation.

"The public is again advised to take precautionary measures as flooding and rain-induced landslides may occur in highly susceptible areas during the heavy rainfall," Jalad said.

He likewise instructed regional DRRM chiefs to make use of all available means of communication to ensure that typhoon warnings are well-cascaded to communities.

TD Ulysses is forecasted to make landfall over Bicol Region-Quezon area on Wednesday and may intensify into a typhoon prior to its landfall according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

As of 10 a.m., TD Ulysses was located 605 km east of Borongan City, Eastern Samar with maximum sustained winds of 55 km/hour near the center and gustiness of up to 70 km/hour.

TD Ulysses is the fourth in the train of tropical cyclones since super typhoon "Rolly" hit the country barely two weeks ago. After Rolly came typhoons "Siony" and "Tonyo" which are now outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

Relatedly, the death toll for super typhoon "Rolly" continues to rise after the NDRRMC said three more bodies were recovered in the typhoon-hit areas, bringing the tally to 25 as of November 9.

Of the fatalities, 21 were recorded in Bicol Region specifically in the provinces of Albay (13), Catanduanes (six), and Camarines Sur (two) while four others were noted in Batangas (three) and Quezon province (one) in the Calabarzon.
