Chris Newsome scored a fadeaway jumper at the buzzer and Meralco escaped past Terrafirma, 95-93, Sunday afternoon to close in on the elusive quarterfinals berth in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Angeles University Foundation Sports and Cultural Center.
Newsome produced the winner with a baseline shot off CJ Perez as the Bolts survived after squandering a 20-point first half lead to assure themselves of at least a playoff for the eighth and final quarters berth.
Meralco improved to 6-4, in a good position to reach the Philippine Cup quarters for the first time since 2015.
“Before this conference started, I thought this is the best All-Filipino team I’ve coached since I’ve been with Meralco and it’s coming true,” said Norman Black, who quickly added that the job’s not finished.
“But we still have one game. We’re still one game short of making our first goal so we’ll just focus in on that,” added Black, whose team faces NorthPort on Wednesday.
The Bolts can also gain a spot if the NLEX Road Warriors, in ninth spot at 4-5, drop one of their final two games in the eliminations.
Raymond Almazan had 15 points and 10 rebounds in his best game this season while Bong Quinto added 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
Allein Maliksi and rookie Aaron Black scored 11 points each even as seldom-used center Bryan Faundo filled up the void left by Reynel Hugnatan, who was rested due to a strained groin, by scoring a season-high 10 points.
Meralco led 45-25 and was cruising throughout when Terrafirma inched its way back.
It took awhile for the Dyip to tie things up when Perez and Juami Tiongson hit back-to-back threes for 93-all, with under a minute left.
Perez blocked Newsome’s jumper at the other end, giving Terrafirma a chance to go ahead. Tiongson, however, missed an attempt on the ensuing possession which set up Newsome’s basket.
Perez and Tiongson finished with 21 points apiece for Terrafirma which dropped to 1-8.
