LPA may turn into tropical depression 'Ulysses,' approaches central and southern Luzon

The potential cyclone to be called “Ulysses” is initially projected to approach the Central and Southern Luzon areas in the coming days, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Nov. 8, Sunday afternoon.

The low pressure area (LPA), which formed on Sunday morning, was estimated at 920 kilometers (km) east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur around 4 p.m.

PAGASA said the LPA may develop into a tropical depression within 24 to 36 hours, while further intensification is not ruled out beyond the monitoring period.

It will be given a local name “Ulysses” once it intensifies into a tropical depression, and may become the third cyclone this month after “Siony” and “Tonyo.”

Based on its forecast track, PAGASA said the LPA will move generally north-northwest from Sunday to Monday evening, then northwest to west-northwest toward the Central-Southern Luzon area.

The LPA has no direct effect yet over any portion of the country as of Sunday, but the weather bureau said rains may begin to affect the eastern sections of Luzon and Visayas as early as Monday afternoon.

PAGASA advised the public to continue monitoring this LPA for its possible effect on the country’s weather conditions in the next few days.

The public and disaster risk reduction and management offices that will likely be affected by the potential cyclone were also advised to take necessary precautionary measures.
