Robredo bats anew for evacuation centers for farm animals, pets

Vice President Leni Robredo on Sunday batted anew for the inclusion of evacuation center for animals of displaced residents to escape the devastation of natural disasters.

In her weekly radio program ”Biserbisyong Leni” on DZXL Robredo also underscored the need to build two- or three floor school buildings in Bicol provinces.
 
Robredo said that since schools are being used for evacuation sites for displaced victims of natural calamities, government might as well build multi-story buildings to keep evacuees safe from floods and allow more space for evacuees.
 
The vice president noted that many people have been evading forced evacuation to remain in their communities that have been declared as danger zones by local authorities and the national government.
 
She recalled her experience in the typhoon-prone Camarines Sur, home province of the Robredos.
 
Robredo recounted that during evacuation operations, heads of the family usually refuse to heed the advice of authorities for them to leave their houses and communities out of concern of their farm animals and even pets.
 
“Kaya kahapon ni-remind ko na naman sila na dapat may evacuation center na ang mga hayop para wala nang dahilan para magpaiwan kasi minsan kahit forced evacuation, talagang may mga tumatago. (That’s why I reminded them yesterday that there should be evacuation centers for animals so that there will no longer be any reason for them to stay because even during forced evacuation, some of them hide),” noted Robredo.
 
            The vice president has been batting for evacuation areas for animals as she pointed out how important farm animals and pets are to many people.
 
            It will be recalled that while leading the distribution of relief goods and assistance to people forcibly evacuated as a result of the Taal volcano eruption, Robredo lamented that many evacuees have been returning to their homes to look after their animals left in their community.
 
            She urged the Batangas provincial government to consider putting up areas to shelter animals in order to stop people from going back to their homes that have already been declared dangerous.
 
            “They will go back home to feed their pets.  So to avoid something bad happening to them, we should have a plan (to evacuate animals),” Robredo told provincial officials during her visit to Batangas evacuation centers.
