Over 4,000 evacuated in Eastern Visayas due to 'Rolly'

TACLOBAN City - A total of 4,159 individuals, or 903 families, have been preemptively evacuated in high-risk areas in preparation for typhoon Rolly in Eastern Visayas on October 31.

The Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) Regional Director and Regional Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council 8 (RDRRMC8) Chairperson Lord Byron Torrecareon said a total of 742 families or 3,513 individuals have been evacuated in Northern Samar province.

There were also 540 stranded passengers, 164

rolling cargoes, and 62

vessels stranded in different areas in Northern Samar ports according to the Philippine Coast Guard.

In Samar province, at least 148 families or 148 individuals have evacuated. A road in Barangay Mercedes, Catbalogan had to be temporarily closed due to heavy rains, but is now passable. All national roads remain passable.

A total of 119 families or 498 individuals have also evacuated in Biliran province.

Flights have been canceled on November 1 and November 2.

Typhoon signal no. 2 has been hoisted in the northern part of Samar and Eastern Samar, and typhoon signal no. 1 for the rest of Samar, Eastern Samar, and Leyte.

Police Regional Office 8 Director Brig Gen. Ronaldo De Jesus directed all deployed PNP personnel to assist their respective local government units in disaster-preparedness measures and possible evacuation.

He also ordered his men to closely monitor areas for possible storm surge, flooding, or landslides to avoid any eventuality.

"I have mandated all units to be on alert as we brace this typhoon. I am also appealing to the public to prepare for this calamity while still adhering to our COVID-19 health protocols. Let us all be safe," De Jesus said.
