More than 20 million children are at risk to face multiple risk of injury, displacement, and even death as super typhoon “Rolly” (international name “Goni”) hits the country, Save the Children Philippines (SCP) reported on Saturday.

Residents carrying their belongings arrive at an evacuation center in Legaspi, Albay province, south of Manila on October 31, 2020, ahead of Typhoon Goni's landfall.

SPC Chief Executive Officer has called on local and national government leaders to protect the most vulnerable sector of children, pregnant, and lactating mothers who face life threatening impacts of Super-typhoon “Rolly.”

“Children from poor households in the coastal towns and remote provinces will bear the brunt of the impact of typhoon Goni as their homes are made of light materials that are easily destroyed by strong winds,” Muyot said.

SPC, citing the 2020 data from the Philippine Statistics Authority, said Luzon is home to 65 million population including 27.2 children, which will be hit hard by the typhoon particularly in Bicol region, Southern Tagalog, Central Luzon, and Metro Manila.

The child rights group said that as the local governments implement their pre-emptive measures, children and their families will have to stay in evacuation areas, exposing them to COVID-19 and other life threatening diseases, hunger, and possible abuse and violence.

The SPC said it will deploy 10-member humanitarian team on Tuesday, Nov. 3, to Southern and Central Luzon provinces to conduct rapid assessment of the impact of super typhoon “Rolly” and identify the support for children.

It added that it has prepositioned life saving items including household kits with basic necessities for families, tarpaulins to build emergency shelters, and hygiene kits in stock so people can take COVID-19 preventive measures.

As of 7:20 a.m. on Sunday, super typhoon “Rolly” has made its second landfall in Tiwi, Albay while unleashing catastrophic violent winds and intense to torrential rainfall along its path.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warned of super typhoon Rolly’s possible catastrophic violent winds and intense to torrential rainfall associated with the region of the eyewall and inner rainbands of the typhoon over Catanduanes, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, northern portion of Sorsogon, Burias Island, Marinduque, central and southern portions of Quezon, Laguna, and eastern portion of Batangas in the next 12 hours.
