BLACKPINK retraces journey in Netflix documentary 'Light Up the Sky'

In just four years, BLACKPINK have emerged as the highest charting female K-pop group to date.

Their song “Ice Cream (with Selena Gomez)” peaked at No. 13 on Billboard Hot 100 and they are the most subscribed female artist in the world on YouTube with 50.2 million subscribers as of writing.

They have four music videos on YouTube’s top 10 most viewed MVs in the first 24 hours of release including “Lovesick Girls.”

But Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa’s rise in worldwide popularity was a product of hard work and dedication while being away from their families.

Fans will learn BLACKPINK’s journey to stardom through Netflix’s documentary “BLACKPINK: Light Up the Sky” that will be released on Oct 14.

The documentary, directed by Caroline Suh, will spotlight on each member: Jisoo, the group’s “unnie” or big sister; Jennie, the rapper whose fierce onstage image contrasts with her soft-spoken nature; Rosé, who is coming into her own as a singer-songwriter; and Lisa, the dancing queen.

BLACKPINK members reflect on the ups and downs of their career, and the challenges they faced to reach success.

“I think what makes K-pop K-pop is the time that we spend as a trainee,” said Jennie in a teaser for the documentary.

Rosé said, “I had never even imagined myself living apart from my family. I’m going to cry” while Lisa said, “Everything was competition at the time.” Jisoo said, “I’d ask myself, ‘Do you want to give up because it’s not easy?’”

The Netflix documentary will reveal the unfiltered sides of BLACKPINK, which continue to push the boundaries with their music. The documentary will be available at www.netflix.com/BlackpinkLightUpTheSky
