Mayor of Davao de Oro town, family test positive for COVID-19

DAVAO CITY - Municipal Mayor Eutropio Jayectin of Montevista town in Davao de Oro confirmed Saturday that he, his wife and their son have tested positive for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

The municipal government of Montevista said "they have disinfected the entire Municipal Hall and advised several employees to undergo self-quarantine measures".

In a statement, Jayectin announced the sad news that he and his family tested positive for COVID-19. However, Jayectin said the criticisms he got for appearing in public was more disconsolate.

Jayectin said his son tested positive for COVID-19 on October 27, while the program where he attended was held a day earlier.

"Sayod ang tanan nga wa nato kini toyoa ug wa nato kini pangandoya apan sugo sa kahigayonan duko ang akong ulo sa tumang pagpa-ubos sa pagdawat niini. Apan mas labaw nga sakit pamation ang mga pagpangdaot gikan sa akong mga kontra sa pulitika ngano kuno mitambong ako sa gihimong programa didto sa sports complex ug uban pang public appearances nga COVID-positive man kuno ang akong anak (Everyone knows that we never intended for this to happen and we never wanted this. But because this has been brought by the circumstances, we humbly accept it. What makes it difficult are the criticisms from my opponents in politics who blames me for attending the program in the Sports Complex and other public appearances when my son has been tested positive for COVID-19)," Jayectin said.

He also said some people took advantage of the situation to malign his image and credibility.

Jayectin said the accusations and the bashing he received from netizens will not help resolve the problem.

"Akong hangyo nga undangon na unta ang pagpagawas ug negatibo nga mga post sa social media nga maoy makahatag kagubot ug panic sa katawhan (I request that we stop posting negative comments on social media which only fuels panic among the public)," he said.

Jayectin said the municipal hall will be opened to the public on November 3 to continue providing services even as there are several employees who need to undergo quarantine to prevent the spread of the virus.

Based on the COVID-19 Case Monitoring Bulletin of the Province of Davao de Oro, as of October 27, Montevista has seven confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Meanwhile, based on the COVID-19 Regional Case Bulletin of DOH Davao Region, the province of Davao de Oro has a total of 50 active cases as of October 30.
