MB Youth Talks tackles the future of work

How do we prepare the youth of today for the work of tomorrow?

Mark your calendars for 4 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 30, to listen in on the next episode of MB Youth Talks. The webinar is a collaboration between Manila Bulletin Lifestyle and entrepreneurship network Impact Hub Manila, for the youth, by the youth.

For many young people, school and education dominate their lives. But what is it all for? At the end of the day, we go to school with the expectation that once we graduate, once we can go off textbooks, we can choose how we want to contribute to society. So shouldn't what we learn in school build up to that?

Raise your hand if you have heard that some of the things that you will learn in the first year of college will be outdated or irrelevant by the time you graduate. Don't get me wrong. Some things stay the same. 2 plus 2 will always equal 4. The words of Noli Me Tangere will still be what Jose Rizal wrote. But go back a few years and you'll see old marketing textbooks that make no mention of Facebook or Instagram. There are outdated business textbooks that scarcely mention the importance of an online storefront.

Nobody taught us how to effectively work from home.

This Friday, MB Youth Talks will be tackling the timely issue of what skills to hone to prepare the youth for the transforming workplace. Hear from Marla Abao, a founding member of Women in Technology (WiTech); Brian Tan, a founder of Effective Altruism Philippines and a merit scholar from Ateneo University; and Jerry Tieng, the chief geek at Titanium Technologies. Impact Hub Manila founder and CEO Ces Rondario will moderate the episode.
