Grab expects 50% demand jump in December

Grab believes riders can adopt cashless payment faster via the Cash-in With Driver feature in its app, to be fully rolled out next month, as the ride-hailing firm prepares for a 50 per cent increase in ridership this December.

At present, only 40 percent of Grab's drivers are operating, with 20,000 drivers off the road, Ronald Roda, Grab Philippines Head of Transport and Shared Services, disclosed in a virtual press briefing.

"Grab is only operating at 30 percent passenger capacity right now but we expect the Cash-in With Driver feature will increase the number of rides by 50 per cent and speed up the recovery of our volume by the end of the year," he elaborated.

But he said that orders for rides normally double every Christmas season, from November onwards.

Thus, despite the fact that the pandemic, combined with the economic slowdown could dampen demand, Grab is still preparing for a 50 percent increase in ridership, Roda confirmed.

And the Cash-in with Driver feature can accelerate passengers' shift to cashless, which is safer and more convenient.

The feature, which can be accessed through an updated version of the Grab app, allows cash-paying commuters to book GrabCar services by activating their GrabPay wallet during the ride, paying cash to their drivers at the end of the trip, and receiving their change credited in their GrabPay wallets.

Grab driver-partners can guide cash-paying commuters on their GrabPay wallet activation.

Cash-in with Driver will be available on GrabCar 2-seater and 4-seater in Metro Manila, GrabBayanihan Car, GrabCar 2-Seater in Cebu and Pampanga, and soon, on GrabTaxi.
