The country will mark September 8 of every year as the "National Green Building Day" to promote environment-friendly and resource-efficient communities based on the latest order of President Duterte.

In Proclamation No. 1030, the President declared the annual occasion to raise public awareness on creating sustainable development in the construction sector.

"It is imperative to intensify existing initiatives to promote and raise awareness on the efficient and equitable use of resources, proper water and waste management, and integration of eco-friendly processes and systems, among others," the proclamation read.

"There is a need to provide opportunities to encourage cooperation between the public and private sectors in advancing the government's commitment to protect the environment," it added.

Under the proclamation, the President directed the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to promote the observance of the National Green Building Day and identify programs and activities for the yearly celebration. The department is tasked to coordinate with concerned non-government organizations and civil society groups on the annual event.

Government agencies, including state corporations and state universities and colleges, as well as local government units have been urged to support the DPWH in the celebration of the National Green Building Day.

The proclamation noted that under the Constitution, the State is mandated to protect and advance the right of the people to "a balanced and healthy ecology in accord with the rhythm and harmony of nature."

Back in 2016, the DPWH adopted the Philippine Green Building Code through Memorandum Circular No. 1 that states the framework of standards to reduce the country's carbon emissions from buildings and promote the health and well-being of the building occupants.

The latest proclamation, signed by the President on Oct. 21, was released to the public on Wednesday.
