Life Saving Technology in One Sweet Ride

The latest Honda CRV looks like any other SUVs out there but under its hood and behind the ordinary-looking steering wheel are technologies that could not only make your driving experience pleasant but could also save your life and the lives of people around you.

At first, I did not accept the offer when they asked me to test drive the Honda CRV and instead told them to send it to the motoring section editor; but they insisted and told me to just focus on the technology under the dashboard with a promise that I would be awed.  When I started using it, I realized that I am not just reviewing a vehicle but a myriad of technologies integrated to create this amazingly beautiful gigantic gadget with driver and passenger safety in mind.

Honda aptly called it Honda Sensing, a technology first used by the Honda Pilot and now made available to other Honda vehicles.  Honda Sensing according to Honda is a suite of technologies designed to expand the driver's situational awareness while also sensing and responding to potential road hazards including other vehicles, road obstacles, and even pedestrians.

One of the main causes of accidents is when a vehicle suddenly departs from its lane.  Honda addressed this concern with its Lane Departure Warning or LDW, what the CRV does is detect and identify road lanes with its front camera and calculates the vehicle's location within the center of the lane, if you're drifting out of the center of the lane, it would send an audible and visual warning loud enough to get your attention but not loud enough to distract you.

If you failed to correct in time, another Honda technology would take over. Lane Keeping Assist System or LKAS would then intervene to help you go back to the center of your lane. LKAS would detect if you're drifting from the center of your lane without signaling and would adjust the steering wheel to keep you in the center.  You would feel the steering wheel give a gentle jolt to remind you to stay in your lane.

More tech to keep you safe.

Another safety feature that could save your life while driving the CRV is the Road Departure Mitigation System or RDM it detects if the CRV is in danger of going off the road. The camera mounted between the rearview mirror and the windshield detects lane markings. If you approach the lines without signaling you would feel a vibration on the steering wheel, it would then automatically redirect you to the road if you don't react on time.

The CRV is also equipped with Forward Collision Warning or FCW. This feature uses sensors to let you know if your vehicle is in danger of getting into a forward or head-on collision and if you fail to react on time, the  Collision Mitigation Braking System or CMBS would intervene by applying the brakes automatically to avoid or reduce the impact of a collision.

The last among the Honda Sensing suite features is the Adaptive Cruise Control ACC. Set this ON and the CRV would automatically brake and accelerate to keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you. The high-quality sensors and unique honda algorithm would assure that the CRV would precisely calculate the distance between the CRV and the vehicle in front of you.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 1.35 million people die each year as a result of road accidents.
