New LPA off S. Luzon emerges as Quinta leaves

Published Oct 27, 2020 02:27 pm

Typhoon "Quinta" (international name: "Molave") has left the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on Tuesday morning but another threat looms as the low pressure area (LPA) east of Southern Luzon may become a tropical depression within 48 hours.

(PAGASA / MANILA BULLETIN)

In its severe weather bulletin issued at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) last spotted "Quinta" at 775 kilometers (km) west of Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro or 255 km north of Pagasa Island, Palawan.

"Quinta" left the PAR around 8 a.m.

Tropical cyclone wind signal No. 1 remains hoisted over Kalayaan Islands as "Quinta" is still expected to have a direct impact on the area.

PAGASA said moderate to heavy with at times intense rains may prevail over Western Visayas, Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Palawan including Calamian, Cuyo, and Kalayaan Islands, and light to moderate with at times heavy rains over Cavite, Laguna Batangas, Rizal, Quezon Davao Region, Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, and Surigao del Sur.

The State weather bureau warned of possible flooding or rain-induced landslides during heavy or prolonged rainfall especially in areas that are highly susceptible to these hazards.

Strong breeze to gale conditions will still be felt in Kalayaan Islands.

Likewise, strong breeze to gale conditions associated with the northeasterlies will prevail in Batanes, northern Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, Apayao, and Ilocos Norte, while occasional gusts associated with the outer circulation of "Quinta" will still be experienced over Western Visayas, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, and the western section of Luzon.

Meanwhile, the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.

While the country is has just started to recover from the onslaught of typhoon "Quinta," PAGASA sees the LPA east of Southern Luzon to intensify into a tropical depression within 48 hours.

Around 10 a.m., Tuesday, the LPA outside the PAR, was estimated at 2,115 kilometers east of Southern Luzon.

PAGASA said the weather disturbance is likely to enter the PAR by Wednesday (Oct. 28) or Thursday (Oct. 29).

PAGASA will be giving it a local name "Rolly" once it becomes a tropical depression within the PAR. It could be the fifth cyclone to form this month after "Nika," "Ofel," "Pepito," and "Quinta."

Weather specialist Robb Gile said the weather disturbance could affect Southern Luzon based on the initial forecast, "but it is too early to say with certainty if the initial forecast track will be followed."

If the projections do not change, the initial effect of the weather disturbance may be felt more likely towards the end of this week, he said.

The public is advised to continue to monitor developments regarding this potential cyclone.
