Private residences tapped to house evacuees in Tabaco City

TABACO CITY, Albay – The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) in Tabaco City has designated some residential houses as evacuation centers due to the shortage of government buildings that could be utilized as temporary shelter for evacuees.

CDRRMO Chief Gel Molato told The Manila Bulletin that in order to put residents living near the danger area out of harm’s way while observing minimum health protocols, they appealed to some residents to accept evacuees.

"Fifty percent lang kasi ang dapat sa mga rooms sa mga designated evacuation centers. So kukulangin tayo kasi we have 10,000 families na dapat i-evacuate. Pero dapat kapamilya o kaya kakilala ang papatuluyin nila. Para at least alam nila kung may (coronavirus disease) COVID-19 yan o wala," he said.

Salvacion Bolanos, who owns a two-storey house in Purok 1, Brgy. Tayhi, accepted 10 families, who will temporarily take a shelter in his home.

"Dito muna sila habang nagpapalipas ng bagyo. Ok lang sa akin kasi kilala ko naman sila," Bolanos told the Manila Bulletin.

The designated evacuation center in Tabaco National High School is being occupied by stranded passengers bound for Catanduanes.

"Sa Tabaco National High School pa lang sana lahat na sila ma-accomodate. Kaso ginamit yung iba ng Philippine Port Authority (PPA) para sa mga stranded passenger. Meron pang isa dun, kaso ginamit din na isolation area," Molato said.

Among those being used as evacuation center were the St. John the Baptist Church and other constructed evacuation centers, located in some public school compounds.

"Hindi kakasya ito dahil kailangan sumunod tayo sa minimum health standard at kailangan masunod yung social distancing para hindi kumalat ang COVID-19," he added.

Molato also narrated that they will ensure that health protocols are being followed even at the evacuation centers.
