Creation of Cebu Geriatric Medical Center pushed

Cebu City 2nd District Rep. Rodrigo Abellanosa has sought the establishment of a 50-bed capacity Geriatric Medical Center in Cebu City that will be dedicated to the care of some 500,000 elderly in Central Visayas.

He filed House Bill No. 7761, citing the “pressing need” to establish an integrated facility to provide the senior citizen population in Region VII with "expert medical attention."

“As they grow even older, we must also realize that their vulnerability to illness increases exponentially and requires more frequent and specialized care,” Abellanosa said in his bill’s explanatory note.

He said it is the duty of the State to ensure the accessibility of medical services and the availability of specialized healthcare to elderly Filipinos.

“This bill calls for the establishment of the Cebu Geriatric Medical Center, a specialty hospital that will cater to providing geriatric medicine, offer(ing) a holistic approach to elderly care and wellness and foster(ing) a comfortable and productive existence to our aging population,” Abellanosa said.

HB 7761 provides that the Cebu Geriatric Medical Center shall be under the supervision of the Department of Health (DOH). It shall have a bed capacity of at least 50 beds.

It provides P500 million funding for the establishment, initial operation, and maintenance of the proposed Medical Center. Thereafter, such amounts as may be necessary for its continued operation and maintenance shall be included in the annual General Appropriations Act.

The measure provides that the DOH, in coordination with the Civil Service Commission (CSC) and the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) shall formulate and promulgate the implementing rules and regulations of the proposed Act.
