Capacity-building program for research on natural products underway

The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD), together with the De La Salle University (DLSU), is implementing a fellowship program for research on natural products.

The capacity-building program, “Tuklas Lunas Fellowship on Natural Products Research,” is led by Dr. Drexel H. Camacho and aims to capacitate selected researchers from Tuklas Lunas Implementing Agencies (TLIAs) in the discipline and in the conduct of natural products research.

The program also entails sharing of DLSU’s available expertise and instruments to help equip and capacitate TLIAs in conducting natural products research, specifically in conducting molecular level study of secondary metabolites.

The Program’s Phase 1 is the conduct of online courses from October 21, 2020 until February 8, 2021 which aims to train and capacitate 15 selected researchers from TLIAs on the following areas/topics:

  1. Chemistry of Natural Products (Theory, isolation techniques, structure elucidation)
  2. NMR Spectroscopy for Natural Products (emphasis on experimentation and structure elucidation)
  3. Chromatography for Natural Products (including dereplication, chemometrics and metabolomics)

The course is being delivered through online lecture sessions, online laboratory activities, and individual mentoring sessions through Zoom and AnimoSpace.

Aside from the abovementioned courses, the Fellowship Program will also include training on the discipline of journal reading using the vast DLSU collection of journals and online subscriptions, and training and access to the SciFinder, which is a very powerful search engine especially in searching for chemical structures.

The Fellowship Program was officially launched on October 19 by DLSU and DOST-PCHRD via Zoom. The selected Tuklas Lunas fellows and designated mentors were presented,and introduced in the said event. The fellows were also oriented on what to expect during the four-month engagement in the program.
