The southwest monsoon or the "habagat" season has officially ended in the country, while the cool weather associated with the holidays is on its way, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.
In its statement released on Friday, PAGASA Administrator Dr. Vicente Malano said a "significant weakening" of the southwest monsoon has been observed by the bureau over the past few days.
Apart from this, Malano said that the strengthening of the high-pressure area over the Asian continent has also led to the gradual changing of the season.
"With these developments, the southwest monsoon season or known locally as 'habagat' is now officially over," Malano announced.
"The season in the Philippines is in the process of transition and will be expecting the gradual start of the northeast monsoon season in the coming days with a shift in the direction of the winds," he added.
The state weather bureau chief also noted that with the ongoing La Niña, the northeast monsoon may be enhanced and could trigger floods, flashfloods, and rain-induced landslides over susceptible areas.
The habagat season, which is usually from June to September, is often characterized by hot and humid weather and frequent rainfall.
While the northeast monsoon or "amihan" is the weather system usually associated with cool weather during the holiday season.
