10-km access road to Asaklat Cave in Quirino being built

Asaklat “Lakab” Cave will no longer be a hidden treasure in Quirino as a 10-kilometer access road leading to the tourist spot is now under way, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said Friday.

A road leading to the cave located in Nagtipunan is currently being paved, Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar said, stressing that the tourist spot “will soon be recognized as one of the many hidden treasures of Quirino” once civil works are done.

“Nagtipunan is truly bestowed with vast natural resources, hence, one of the Department of Tourism-DPWH Convergence and Special Support Program (CSSP) objectives is to extend lifeline support and foster tourism industry,” Villar said.

The entire 10-kilometer road project is expected to be completed in 2023 at the earliest, the DPWH Secretary added.

Phase 1 of the tourism road project costing P15 million has been completed. It involves the construction of a two-lane portland concrete cement pavement with provision of drainage and slope protection structures on a 600-meter portion of the project.

“By constructing well-paved access roads to more tourist destinations, the local government is given the opportunity to capitalize on potential assets contributory to regaining the economy from the COVID-19 crisis,” Villar said.

The road project is being implemented under the Tourism Road Infrastructure Program (TRIP) of the department and funded under the General Appropriation Act (GAA) of 2020.
