Storm signals lifted as 'Pepito' churns towards Vietnam

Published Oct 21, 2020 06:17 pm

All storm warnings were lifted this afternoon as severe tropical storm "Pepito" (international name "Saudel") started to advance towards the central portion of Vietnam.

In its severe weather bulletin issued at 5 p.m., the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) located Pepito at 295 kilometers west of Dagupan City in Pangasinan.

It is still inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) but will likely exit the PAR tomorrow.

Based on its latest forecast track, Pepito will accelerate and turn west beginning Friday towards the central portion of Vietnam.

Tomorrow afternoon, Pepito will be 415 kms west of Sinait, Ilocos Sur. On Friday, it will be 540 kms west of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte or outside the PAR.

On Saturday afternoon, Pepito will be 890 kms west of Northern Luzon, outside PAR, and on Sunday, it will be 1,270 kms west of Northern Luzon, also outside PAR.

From a tropical storm from the time it made landfall until it re-emerged over the sea, Pepito intensified into a severe tropical storm this afternoon with maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 115 kph.

PAGASA said the tropical cyclone may continue to gradually intensify while over the West Philippine Sea and may reach its peak intensity Friday or Saturday.

No tropical cyclone wind signal is no longer in effect but light to moderate with at times heavy rains may still prevail over Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, Negros Occidental, Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Zambales, Bataan, Occidental Mindoro, and Palawan.

These areas were still advised to take necessary precautionary measures in the event of flooding and rain-induced landslides that may occur during heavy or prolonged rainfall.

High to gale-force winds due to the northeasterly surface wind flow will prevail over Northern Luzon, especially in coastal and mountainous areas.

A gale warning is also in effect due to rough to very rough sea conditions, with waves that may reach 2.5 to 5.5 meters, over the entire seaboards of Northern and Central Luzon, seaboard of northern Quezon, including Polillo Islands, and western seaboards of Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, Lubang Islands, Palawan, and Calamian and Kalayaan Islands.

Sea travel is risky over these areas, especially for those using small boats, PAGASA warned.

Moderate to rough seas with waves reaching up to 1.5 to 3 meters will also prevail over the eastern seaboards of southern Quezon, Bicol, Eastern Visayas, Caraga, and Davao region.

PAGASA advised those using small boats to take necessary precautionary measures while venturing out to sea, while inexperienced mariners should avoid navigating in these conditions.

The tropical depression monitored by PAGASA at 1,865 kms east-northeast of extreme Northern Luzon is still unlikely to enter the PAR and is not expected to affect the country’s weather condition.

The rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with a high chance of isolated afternoon or evening rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.
