Omega hopes to discover new 'PPV' boxer

The Cebu-based boxing outfit Omega Sports Promotions is hoping the four-card event on Oct. 7 could pave way to the discovery of a Filipino boxer worthy of attention from the big US market.

“That’s our mission,” said Julius Erving Jungco, the head trainer of the Omega’s stable of boxers, said Friday.

“The mecca in boxing in the US. We hope for them to notice our boxers,” added Jungco, referring to US-based boxing outfits like Bob Arum’s Top Rank Promotions, Golden Boy Promotions of boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya, and Floyd Mayweather’s Mayweather Promotions.

“We’re hoping that we’ll be able to produce a world class pay-per-view talents like Manny Pacquiao or Nonito Donaire. We want the boxing world to know that there is Omega Sports Promotions are we are willing to provide quality boxers.”

In the Philippines, the only boxing outfit that is at par with the US-based promoters is the MP Promotions of Sen. Pacquiao, the Filipino boxing icon.

Omega has actually produced a couple of world class boxers, including WBO bantamweight champion John Riel Casimiro, who successfully defended his crown in the US last weekend, and also world title contender Jhack Tepora.

The bouts in Cebu will feature four of Omega’s fighters, including reigning World Boxing Association South light flyweight champion Ronnie Vecilles, who is also ranked No. 10 in the World Boxing Council ratings.

Christian Araneta, on the other hand, was a former WBC Asia silver champion in the light flyweight division.

The event next week will serve as the first for boxing in the country despite challenges brought the coronavirus pandemic.

The organizer has set up strict health protocols which were approved by the government, including the Games and Amusement Board led by its chairman Abraham “Baham” Mitra.

Vecilles will face Baguio City’s Junel Lacar in a light flyweight 10-rounder while Araneta clashes against Richard Rosales of Bohol also in a 10-round light flyweight match.

The other boxers of Omega seeing action next week are Penitente Apolinar and Carlo Bacaro. Apolinar meets Cagayan de Oro’s Jetro Pabustan in a featherweight 10-rounder bout, while Bacaro takes on fellow Cebuano Jeffrey Stella in a light welterweight encounter set for six rounds.

All the boxers, trainers and other people involved in the event have been staying inside the “ ubble" the past two weeks at the International Pharmaceuticals Inc. in Mandaue City.
