Mariah Carey confirms clash with another pop diva after 22 years

For the first time in 22 years, Mariah Carey broke her silence on the controversy surrounding her appearance in the historic charity show "VH1 Divas Live!" in 1998.

In the show, Mariah appeared with other music superstars Aretha Franklin, Shania Twain, Gloria Estefan, Carole King, and Celine Dion.

There were rumors that Mariah and Celine clashed during the show but not one of them talked about it - until now. Mariah did not name the singer she clashed with but reports said that she was clearly alluding to Celine.

Mariah reflects on an encounter she had with Céline in her new autobiography "The Meaning Of Mariah Carey" out now.

"The duel diva had gone too far before (in my humble opinion) and seemed to be trying to outdo Aretha. That. It happened. I couldn't believe that someone was trying to outshine Aretha Franklin in his honor while singing about Jesus. Maybe it was a big cultural gap, but it seemed crazy to me, and I didn't want to participate in that. As this happened, my body started involuntarily to retreat out of the Divas line and I started to join the support singers, most of whom I knew. It seemed like blasphemy to me, and I wanted to be out of reach if the lightning came,” said Mariah.

In 2019, responding to critics about her performance with Aretha, Dion said: “When you’re next to Aretha, you’re out of your brain. You’re out of your body. You’re out of your soul.”
