GAB reinstates Calvin Abueva's pro license

The Games and Amusements Board agreed to reinstate the license of Phoenix Super LPG’s Calvin Abueva provided he meets two conditions set by the government body for professional sports.

Chairman Baham Mitra said Abueva needs to attend a seminar on “The Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards of a Professional Athlete” and sign a commitment to abide by those guidelines and undergo a mandatory drug test which is a medical requirement of GAB in order to complete the process.

GAB’s decision came days after Abueva and Phoenix coach Topex Robinson met with commissioner Eduard Trinidad last Tuesday in a bid to be reinstated in time for the PBA restart on Oct. 11 in Clark, Pampanga.

“Calvin Abueva was remorseful in what he did and was sincere enough to accept his wrongdoings and asked for an apology for his actions with a promise not to repeat the same mistakes and set a good example to the audience especially the young fans,” Mitra said in a statement.

Once the GAB conditions are made, PBA commissioner Willie Marcial is expected to decide if those are enough to bring Abueva back on the hardcourt.

Abueva is part of the Phoenix contingent in the PBA bubble and was part of the team’s first scrimmage at the Angeles University Foundation campus.
