Netizens ask: Is she grieving a loss or seeking attention?
Just hours after American model Chrissy Teigen shared the news of the loss of her unborn baby Jack on her personal Twitter and Instagram accounts, quite a number of people couldn’t help but give their unwarranted thoughts on the black-and-white photo that she posted.
In the post, she revealed that she and singer-songwriter John Legend “were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusion. It just wasn’t enough.” The photo on Twitter shows Chrissy in a hospital gown, crying and holding her two hands together, on the bed. “On this darkest of days, we will grieve, we will cry our eyes out. But we will hug and love each other harder and get through it,” she ends the long post.
Fully formed tiny human
Though a lot of friends and followers left comments of sympathy and prayers, another group of netizens didn’t agree with her move to share this very intimate moment. One alarming comment that triggered a barrage of replies was from a man who wrote, “I hate to be that guy but everyone, please keep in mind they are just clumps of cells until birth.” Followers were quick to defend, with one mom sharing the loss of her stillborn son at 24 weeks, “who was completely formed and very tiny. How insensitive.”
Too personal to share
Another comment was that of her sharing something very intimate. One woman tweeted, “This picture is pretty strange! I wouldn’t want any pictures of such a personal thing happening.” Another one felt that these photos were “directed,” saying that “any other woman wouldn’t want herself half-naked photographers after just losing a baby.” Again, a lot of mothers pointed out that “people do take photos after losing their baby. These are the only photos they’ll get.”
So should they have posted? Unfortunately, celebrities will be judged for every single move they make—especially at their rawest and most vulnerable states. In the end, it all boils down to respect, empathy, and support for each other.
