The Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) and AF Payments Inc. (AFPI) today opened e-load stations or stored value updaters for Beep cards at all LRT-2 stations in a bid to implement contactless and simplified loading transactions for train riders.

"Apart from the strict implementation of safety measures to beat COVID-19, this project initiated by LRTA and AFPI aims to provide safer and seamless ticket transaction to the commuting public," LRTA Administrator Reynaldo Berroya said in a statement.
According to Berroya, users may reload their Beep cards through digital wallets and banking apps. After successfully purchasing load, cardholders will just head over to these e-load stations to update the card for an easy and contactless transaction.
Berroya said the new devices from AFPI, the operator of Beep cards, will enable train riders to skip long lines for Ticket Vending Machines and avoid the need for cash handling which is in line with the directive of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to provide cashless transactions in public transport.
"Our passengers have already adjusted to the new normal. This new method of loading is easy, safe, and convenient especially to those already accustomed to online transactions. By simply texting and tapping, passengers may easily use the Stored Value Updater machines," the LRTA chief added.
The LRT-2 closed last July its Passengers Assistance Office (PAO) for ticket purchasing and loading to promote contactless transactions as part of the "new normal" in public transportation.
Selling or loading of tickets has been made solely through the Ticket Vending Machines (TVM) to protect passengers and station personnel from the threat of COVID-19.
The PAO, however, remains open to handle operations-related inquiries and ticket problems, and to issue concessionary cards to senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
Currently, over-the-air loading for Beep cards is available for users of BPI mobile app, Paymaya, EON by Unionbank, Akulaku, JustPay.to/beep, and Load to beep™ (SMS).
The Beep card, which is valid for four years, can also be used in Metro Manila’s major railways as well as some point-to-point buses and modern jeepneys across the country.
The Beep e-load stations were opened in time with the enforcement of an increased passenger capacity in LRT-2 to ensure a faster and more convenient journey for commuters as the economy slowly reopens.
"We will comply with the directive to gradually increase train capacity. We will make sure to maintain an acceptable extent of physical distancing, and enforce the seven public transport commandments inside the trains, considering that the safety of our passengers remains our top priority," Berroya said.
Maximum passenger capacities of other Metro train lines, including MRT-3, LRT-1, and PNR, have also increased to 30 percent.
