PCG commandant urges new district commanders to be 'fatherly' role models in enforcing discipline

Newly-installed Coast Guard commanders on Wednesday were urged to be “father figures” in their respective districts in disciplining their subordinates.

In a virtual ceremony, Admiral George Ursabia, Philippine Coast Guard commandant, challenged the newly-installed district commanders “to guide the morale and take care of the welfare of their personnel to ensure that they will continue to do what is right in service and in life.”

Commodore Allan Corpuz was installed as the new commander of Coast Guard District Western Visayas (CGDWV) while Commodore Edgar Boado assumed as the new commander of Coast Guard District Southwestern Mindanao (CGDSWM).

“My advice to both of you: take care of the stars you are carrying. Those stars mean you are shepherds of your subordinates. Lead them in the right direction,” Ursabia said.

He also encouraged Corpuz and Boado to become father figures and role models in their respective districts.

“We do not want them to become bastards in service, more so in society. Hence, we should not tolerate their mistake(s). We have to discipline them whenever we see them no longer walking the right path. Above all, let us not agitate them to do something wrong, be it implicit or implied,” Ursabia added.

The two district commanders assumed their post during the Coast Guard’s 119th founding anniversary.

During the celebration, special recognition was given to Probationary Ensign Ralph Barajan, who also will receive the distinguished 2020 International Maritime Organization (IMO) Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea for his heroic deed of saving more than 60 individuals onboard the ill-fated MV Siargao Princess in Cebu last year.

Candidate Coast Guardswoman Lhea Diño also received a special recognition “for exercising honesty and integrity” when she returned an envelope containing P135,000 in September.

The Coast Guard also commissioned into service its second airbus light twin-engine helicopter from Germany.

It is a four-ton-class twin-engine helicopter equipped with high frequency radios, emergency flotation gear, fast-roping, cargo sling, search light and electro-optical systems to perform critical missions including search and rescue, medical evacuation, maritime security operations and maritime law enforcement.

The Coast Guard also honored its personnel working on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic.
