La Naval 'dungaw' gives faithful a glimpse of hope

Although no procession of the Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary (La Naval de Manila) was held on Sunday, Oct. 11, for the Feast of the Our Lady of La Naval, the faithful were still able to get a glimpse of the image.

The image was brought outside the patio of the Sto. Domingo Church in Quezon City after the 3 p.m. mass of Cubao Bishop Honesto Ongtioco for the “Dungaw” to allow the people to venerate the Our Lady from afar or at a distance.

Church officials explained that it has been a practice even before to bring out the image during particular instances such as every October fiesta and during times of affliction.

“During times of affliction the Dominican friars would bring out the image of the Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary for the people to venerate it,” said the church official.

“The image is being brought out to tell the people the Virgin Mary is with them in this journey in life…that’s the same we are trying to express this afternoon,” he added.

During the “dungaw,” the faithful prayed the rosary. The image was brought back inside the church after an hour.

The Sto. Domingo Church has been holding the “dungaw” since April amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

Meanwhile, to familiarize the faithful with the story of the La Naval, Fr. Herminio Dagohoy, OP provided a brief explanation, which was released during the centennial celebration of the Our Lady’s Canonical Coronation years back.

During the month of October being the month of the Rosary, many barrios and towns in the Philippines celebrate their fiesta in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Oct. 7 is the feast day dedicated by Pope St. Pius V, a Dominican, to the Lady of the Rosary as an act of thanksgiving for having saved Europe from the invading Moors at the Battle of Lepanto, near the Corinthian Gulf, in October 1571.

But here in the Philippines, the celebration has acquired a different color with the victory of the combined Filipino-Spanish forces against the Dutch in 1646 known in the pages of history as the Battles of “La Naval.”

This was the origin of the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary of La Naval de Manila whose celebrated image sculpted in 1593 by a Chinese sculptor has been venerated in the Church of Sto. Domingo, also known as the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary.
