Financial assistance for Alex Eala 'still being processed'

The Philippine Sports Commission apologized to the family of Alex Eala for the “unintended misinformation” regarding the financial assistance for the tennis ace.

In a statement, the PSC corrected the previous posting stating that Eala has received P3 million funding for her training and tournament abroad and explained it was still being processed while waiting for requirements.

“We apologize to the public and the family of Ms. Eala for any misunderstanding this may have caused. The PSC stands by its commitment to support Ms. Eala on previously approved and future training activities and competition,” the PSC statement read.

In a separate statement, Eala’s parents said the PSC promised financial support but clarified that they "haven’t received any amount yet.”

“In the wake of a great run of Alex at Roland Garros, the French Open, it is sad to see that agencies claim to support athletes with millions of pesos inspite of not having given a single centavo yet. Raising our kids in highly competitive tennis, we always teach them that the spirit of each sport is fair play. I think it’s safe to say that it should apply to individuals as well as agencies. Just to clarify, PSC has mentioned that they will support Alex, but we haven’t received any amount yet,” Alex’s father, Michael Eala, said in a Facebook post.

Alex is coming off a semifinal finish at the French Open Juniors, the first Filipina to do so apart from Felix Barrientos in 1985.

A scholar of the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, Spain, the 15-year-old also won the Australian Open girls doubles titles last January.
