8-star hotels now OK to operate for staycations -- DOT

Eight star-rated hotels in Metro Manila have now been granted a Certificates of Authority to Operate for Staycation (CAOS) by the Department of Tourism (DOT).

These include Grand Hyatt Manila, Makati Shangri-La, Okada Manila, Nobu Hotel, Shangri-La at the Fort, Solaire Resort, Edsa Shangri-La, and Joy Nostalg Hotels and Suites Manila. 

Based on DOT Administrative Order No. 2020-006-A or the amended guidelines on the operations of accommodation establishments for staycation purposes under a general community quarantine (GCQ), persons of all ages are allowed to do staycations, except those with underlying medical conditions.

However, the DOT only allows accommodation establishments to operate for staycations if they are “not concurrently being used as quarantine or isolation facilities for repatriated overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) or returning overseas Filipinos  or as quarters for health workers.”

But during Thursday’s press briefing, members of the Hotel Sales and Marketing Association (HSMA) Philippines said the matter is now being discussed with the DOT. 

Prior to this, the HSMA launched the massive September Online Sale (SOS) for all hotels and accommodation establishments nationwide to facilitate the recovery of the sector. 

HSMA said it generated some P14.1 million in bookings and considered SOS “a success.”

The group said a large chunk of bookings were for hotels in Pasay and Manila with 36.3 percent, indicating that Filipinos want to break the monotony of staying at home after months of lockdown. 

Boracay Island also earned the highest bookings during the sales promo with 13.3 percent.

Majority of buyers came from Metro Manila, which remains under GCQ, followed by those who are based in Cebu City and Davao City. International buyers from Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, United States, Canada, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom (UK) also participated in the SOS.
