Pasig River Ferry Service resumes operations

The Pasig River Ferry Service (PFRS) resumed operations Thursday after being temporarily suspended due to the volume of water hyacinths that covered a portion of the river recently.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), which operates the only water-based mode of public transport in the metropolis, announced that short distance trips from Pinagbuhatan in Pasig City to Sta. Ana in Manila will resume.

“The MMDA regularly conducts clean-up activities to clear the river of water hyacinths and other waste through trash skimmer, trash boat, and trash trap,” the MMDA said.

The operations of the river ferry service were temporarily suspended for a few days due to the thick formation of water hyacinths along the portion of the Pasig River, which made boat travel difficult.

“Although the MMDA continues its clean-up activities in the river through trash skimmer, trash boat, and trash trap, it is not enough due to the continuous multiplication of water hyacinths in the Pasig River during the rainy season,” said the agency.

MMDA spokesperson Celine Pialago said Wednesday the MMDA has been hauling at least five truckloads of water hyacinths from Pasig River daily since the start of the rainy season.
