DSWD assures it has adequate standby funds, stockpiles for disasters
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) assured Thursday. Oct. 8, that it has enough standby funds and stockpiles to respond to any disasters or calamities.
DSWD Secretary Rolando Bautista gave the assurance, as the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warned the public that a low pressure area (LPA) and the southwest monsoon or “habagat” will bring moderate to heavy rains over Southern Luzon and the Bicol Region, including Metro Manila and Visayas, in the next 24 hours.
“Tinitiyak namin sa lahat na sapat ang pondo na magagamit ng ahensya upang tumugon sa kahit anong sakuna at kalamidad,” he said in a virtual press briefing.
(We assure everyone that the agency has enough funds to respond to any disasters and calamities.)
He said the DSWD currently has standby funds amounting to over P545 million, while it has 230,000 Family Food Packs (FFPs) worth P220 million that are available for distribution.
Bautista noted that it has a stockpile of non-food items worth over P380 million.
“So masasabi na sapat ang ating pondo para matugunan natin ang anumang kalamidad o disaster,” he said.
(So it can be said that our funds are enough to respond to any type of calamity and disaster.)
“Ang Departamento ay nakahandang magbigay ng tulong sa lokal na pamahalaan upang madagdagan ang kanilang imbentaryo ng family food packs at non-food items, at tulungan silang tugunan ang mga pangangailangan ng kanilang nasasakupan,” Bautista assured.
(The Department is ready to provide assistance to the local governments to augment their inventory of family food packs and non-food items, and to help them to respond to the needs of their constituents.)
According to PAGASA, the southern part of Quezon province, Batangas, Cavite, Laguna, Marinduque, Romblon, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, northern portion of Palawan including Calamian, Cuyo, and Kalayaan Islands, as well as Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, and Catanduanes should brace for brace for moderate to heavy rains within 24 hours.
The state weather bureau said light to moderate with at times heavy rains will also be experienced over Metro Manila, Rizal, Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands, Quezon, Palawan, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, and Visayas.
It warned that during heavy or prolonged rainfall, flooding and rain-induced landslides may occur.
