2 killed in shooting, explosion in Negros town

BACOLOD CITY - A misunderstanding between two families claimed the lives of a man and his uncle in Barangay Abaca, Cauayan, Negros Occidental on Tuesday.

Police identified the fatalities as John Rey Delocario, 27, and his uncle, Roy Delocario, both residents of Barangay Lumbia.

Maj. Lowell Garinganao, town police chief, said the younger Delocario, reportedly armed with two hand grenades, went to the house of the suspect identified as 18-year-old Renjie Layan, and challenged the latter to a fight.

Layan allegedly shot John Rey, hitting his back, which caused his immediate death, the town police chief said.

Garinganao said Roy arrived and picked the grenade. He allegedly tried to throw it at the suspect’s house, but he tripped and fell on the ground causing the grenade to explode. He died on the spot.

Garinganao said no other injuries were reported because Layan and his family fled even before the explosion happened.

Later that night, Layan surrendered to the police and turned over a homemade 12 gauge shotgun he used in the crime. Layan is the brother-in-law of Roy.

He said both families agreed to settle their conflict. No charges will be filed against Layan.
