Virtual forum on teacher motivation held

The Department of Education (DepEd) hosted a virtual forum Friday on a study on teacher motivation in celebration of the National Teachers’ Month (NTM) from Sept. 5 to Oct. 5.

DepEd, together with Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Center for Educational Innovation and Technology (SEAMEO INNOTECH), conducted the National Teachers’ Month Forum entitled, “TEACHER MOTIVATION: iTEACH FOR A BETTER FUTURE.”

The forum featured the findings and recommendations of a study titled “Exploring Teachers’ Whys: Understanding Motivation Among Teachers in the Philippines” which focuses on the motivation among Filipino teachers.

The study stemmed from the speech of DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones during the SEAMEO Governing Board Meeting in Manila in 2017 where she emphasized the importance of understanding teachers’ motivations to improve student achievement outcomes.

In response to Briones’ call, the INNOTECH conducted the study to gain a deeper understanding on the main reasons for going into the teaching profession and pursuing a teaching career.

Aimed to provide policy recommendations that will encourage teachers to join and remain in the Philippine education system, INNOTECH researchers surveyed a total of 107 public elementary and secondary schools from 21 school divisions across 17 regions and some 2,764 teachers were interviewed for the study.

To further understand the research, Senior Specialist and INNOTECH Educational Research Unit Head Dr. Sherlyne Almonte Acosta presented the main findings of the study.

UP College of Education Dean Dr. Jerome Buenviaje, Philippine Normal University former President Dr. Esther B. Ogena, and DepEd Division of Iloilo City Master Teacher II Dr. Alma Janagap reacted to the presented findings.

The annual Teachers Forum is organized by INNOTECH as part of its contributions to the National Teachers Month Coordinating Council (NTMCC).

INNOTECH or the Regional Center for Educational Innovation and Technology, headed by Center Director and former Undersecretary of the DepEd Dr. Ramon C. Bacani, is part of a regional intergovernmental organization dedicated to developing solutions to address education development concerns in Southeast Asia.

The INNOTECH has been hosted by the Philippines since 1976 and serves the region through its service areas of research and innovation, training, and knowledge management.
