New Iligan City foot bridge draws selfies from residents, visitors

ILIGAN CITY – Amid the debilitating effects of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, Iliganons have found a reason to be hopeful, and feel proud of their city after an illuminated steel hanging pedestrian bridge located in Barangay Tambacan was opened on Wednesday.

Hundreds of residents have had their selfies taken at the city’s latest sensation, which becomes all the more resplendent at night with the LED strip lights and flood lights hanging from the suspension cables.

The bridge, which was constructed by the Department of Public Works and Highways-Lanao del Norte Second District Engineering Office (DPWH-LDN2 DEO), glitters at night with LED strip lights and flood lights hanging on the suspension cables.

“With the lighting of this (Tambacan) bridge, we want to deliver the message of hope not only to the people of Barangay Tambacan but to all the good people of Iligan City. We want to show that there is light at the end of every dark tunnel and that one day this pandemic will finally come to an end,” said Department of Public Works and Highways-Lanao del Norte Second District Engineering Office (DPWH-LDN2 DEO) Head Alykhan Ali.

The new pedestrian steel bridge replaced the run-down wooden hanging bridge, which was constructed in the early 1970s.

“We are thankful to DPWH and Congressman (Frederick) Siao for giving us this project.  Finally, we will no longer worry about the safety of our residents, particularly the young students,” said Barangay Tambacan chairperson Jimmy Sale.

The lighting project was primarily implemented to deter crimes at the hanging bridge especially where there would still be a significant volume of pedestrians even at night time.

Also, pedestriaans will now have shorter travel time between their homes and their workplace, or businesses.
