30 Chinese nationals nabbed for not wearing face masks in Makati bar

Thirty Chinese nationals who were nabbed for not wearing face masks in a bar in Makati City were freed after paying a P1, 000 fine each early Saturday morning (September 26), the Makati City Public Safety (PSD) said.

"Our people issued P1, 000 citation tickets to them. After that, we released them," Butz Martirez, Makati PSD Operations chief said in Filipino.

Acting on a tip that Chinese nationals were having a “mass gathering” at a bar in Barangay Pio del Pilar, police authorities rushed to the nightspot at midnight Saturday. The violators were reportedly having a drinking spree inside the bar.

"The police called us to issue tickets to the 30 Chinese nationals in the bar. They were the ones who went there first," Martirez said.

"They were cited for not wearing face masks. The violators were also not practicing social distancing," Martirez added.

City Ordinance No. 2020-089 mandates the wearing of face masks or other protective gear outside the home while the city is dealing with a public health emergency.

Violators will be fined in the amount of P1, 000 on the first offense, P3,000 on the second offense, and P5, 000 and/or a maximum of six months imprisonment upon the discretion of the court on the third and succeeding offenses.
