Two weather disturbances may bring rains this weekend

A gloomy and rainy weather is expected to prevail over the country this weekend due to two weather disturbances affecting the country, the state weather bureau said on Friday.

Weather specialist Raymond Ordinario of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the agency continues to monitor the low pressure area (LPA) which was last spotted off 615 kilometers east of Baler, Aurora as of Friday morning.

According to Ordinario, they are considering two scenarios that could likely happen regarding the LPA -- it could possibly dissipate within the next 36 to 48 hours, or it could further develop into a tropical cyclone as it is still moving over the waters.

In the latest weather bulletin of PAGASA, it said that the LPA, as well as another weather system, the southwest monsoon or "habagat," will continue to affect the Southern Luzon and the Visayas area.

PAGASA said the LPA and habagat will bring cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms over MIMAROPA, CALABARZON, Bicol Region, and Western Visayas.

While in Metro Manila and the rest of the country, partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms will prevail due to localized thunderstorms.

Residents in areas affected by the two weather systems were advised on possible flash floods or landslides during severe thunderstorms, PAGASA added.

Should the LPA developed into a tropical depression, it will be locally named "Nika", the 14th tropical cyclone that entered the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) this year and the fourth for September alone.

PAGASA's forecast showed that at least two to three tropical cyclones are expected to enter PAR this September, as well as in October.

Based on historical records, PAGASA said the country gets an average of 20 tropical cyclones annually.
