Duterte unfazed by COVID-19, says he's OK if he catches it

The President admitted Monday that it would be "okay" if he gets infected with the disease, noting that a priest critical of his leadership had even wished for his illness.
"Kita mo may pari, sabi niya, 'Ito si Duterte dapat may COVID.' A day after, siya ang nagkaroon ng COVID (Look at this priest, he said 'Duterte should be infected with COVID.' A day after, he was infected with COVID)," Duterte said during a taped public address aired on state television Monday night.
"Baka dadapo rin sa akin ‘yan, okay lang. There’s no wise guy who can really... (It might reach me, that's okay. There's no wise guy who can really...)," the 75-year-old leader added.
The President, however, is opposed to relaxing the country's health measures needed to fight the spread of the coronavirus disease.
Duterte urged the public to continue wearing face masks as a precaution against the illness until the coronavirus vaccine is developed.
The chief executive wore a face mask during the meeting with his Cabinet members in Davao City Monday night.
"When you ease up the requirements, ah delikado ‘yan (that's dangerous),” Duterte said.
"You still have to wear the mask pati ‘yung sa ilong pati sa mukha or something enough to cover your face. But iyong plastic na ginagamit ng karamihan ngayon, iyon ang pinakatama na magawa ninyo (You still have to wear the mask to cover your nose and your face or something enough to cover your face. The plastic (shield) used by many nowadays, that's the correct thing to do)," he said.
Since the strict coronavirus lockdown was enforced last March, the President's movement has been limited by his security team to ensure his health and safety.
Duterte's public engagements have been reduced as the Presidential Security Group (PSG) enforced stricter protocols to provide a 360-degree protection for the President.
Among the health protocols are coronavirus testing for people who will hold a meeting with the President, no-touch policy on the Chief Executive, and a six- to 10-meter distance from other people.
