CrossFit Games: Reigning champions top Day 1 first leg

Reigning champions Mat Fraser and Tia-Clair Toomey displayed dominance after topping Day 1 of the first leg in the CrossFit Games 2020.

Held remotely at their respective gyms Friday, Toomey and Fraser were among the 30 men and 30 women competing for five spots at the in-person final in California in October.

Fraser of USA topped the Friendly Fran and Damn Diane events but placed fourth and eight in the 1RM Front Squat and 1,000-M Row respectively.

The four-time champion scored 360 points, creating a huge gap in the ranking. American Noah Olsen (281), Australian Bayden Brown (280), Jeffrey Adler of Canada (262) and Jonne Koski of Finland (245) complete the cast for top five in order.

In women's play, Toomey of Australia made history after acing three events -- Friendly Fran, 1RM Front Squat, Damn Diane -- to become the first athlete to win three opening workouts at the CrossFit Games. She placed 6th in the 1,000-M Row.

The thee-time champion tallied 380 points followed by Americans Brooke Wells (332) and Amanda Barnhart (281).

Kara Sunders of Australia (271) and Dani Speegle of USA (260) placed fourth and fifth respectively.

CrossFit action will continue Saturday as athletes face three more opening workouts for finals berth.
