Dynamite factory uncovered in Northern Samar

A place used for manufacturing dynamites was uncovered in Barangay Burabod, San Antonio Island, Northern Samar after an explosion took place in the area, the Philippine Coast Guard said Friday.

A man, whose identity remains withheld pending investigation, was hurt during the explosion.

Several improvised blasting caps and other explosive components were found in the area during the panel inspection conducted by a team from the Coast Guard and Philippine National Police.

Initial investigation showed that “the place is used in secretly manufacturing dynamites” and the injured man, who was immediately brought to a nearby hospital by his older brother, is believed to be the one behind the explosion.

Authorities alleged that the explosion, which took place at 11:54 a.m. Thursday, was due to a lighted cigarette.

“After evaluation, the investigation team suggested that the reported explosion was possibly caused by a lighted cigarette of the suspect behind the explosion,” the Coast Guard said.

“The investigation team believed that the lighted cigarette initiated the spontaneous explosion of a bundle of detonating cords,” it added.

The suspect behind the explosion and the owner of the place are currently under investigation, the Coast Guard said.
