2 possible causes of Manila Bay fishkill bared

Department of Environment and Natural Resources Undersecretary Benny Antiporda said Friday sabotage or illegal fishing might be the cause of the recent fish kill in Manila Bay.

Antiporda said the site of the fish kill is at the Baseco Compound which is far from the Manila Bay area where the DENR is currently implementing a beautification project in which crushed dolomite rocks are being poured on the shoreline to give it a white sand effect.

He explained that fish kill is not nothing new but maintained the possibility of illegal fishing being the cause of this.

“Maaaring meron na namang nag-illegal fishing, gumamit ng cyanide or meron pong sumasabotahe sa atin just to discredit the government (There may be illegal fishing activities using cyanide or they may be groups just sabotaging (the project) to discredit the government),’’ Antiporda said.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources explained that the fish kill was a result of low oxygen level in the sea.
