Robredo said she personally congratulated Gapay on his designation since she was not able to attend the formal turnover rites last month.

Gapay is the 54th chief of staff of the AFP. A member of the Philippine Military Class of 1986, he was the Philippine Army commanding general prior to his assumption
to the country’s top military post.

“I also took the opportunity to thank the AFP for being a dependable partner in our various initiatives, especially those in line with its COVID-19 response,“ she said in a Facebook post, sharing photos of their Tuesday meeting.

The vice president noted members of the 51st Engineer Brigade of the Philippine Army helped her office build the temporary shelters for medical frontliners under The Oasis Project.

Robredo’s office built these housing units in the Lung Center of the Philippines and Quirino Memorial Medical Center, both in Quezon City, and those that now serve  as the triage and quarantine areas at the Chinese General Hospital and the Manila Doctors Hospital in Manila.

“Various units of the AFP have also been helping us bring assistance, such as PPE sets, locally produced protective suits, and medical supplies, to different parts of the Philippines, especially to far-flung communities,” she said.

“Members of the AFP at the Vice President Security Detachment have also been active participants in OVP’s COVID-19 Response Operations, particularly through the free shuttle service for frontliners in Metro Manila and in Cebu,” Robredo added.
