LPA likely to develop into a storm; enhanced southwest monsoon to bring rains

The low pressure area (LPA) over Luzon and the enhanced southwest monsoon or "habagat" will continue to bring rains over the western section of the country in the next 24 hours.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the LPA is more likely to develop into a tropical depression within 24 hours and will be named "Leon."

Light to moderate rains with at times heavy rains are expected over Metro Manila, Aurora, Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac, Zambales, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Kalayaan Islands, Negros Occidental, Guimaras, Iloilo, Capiz, Antique, Aklan, Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-tawi.

PAGASA warned the public, especially those in high-risk areas, of possible flash floods or landslides during heavy or prolonged rainfall.

The rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.

The LPA was already in the vicinity of Magsaysay, Occidental Mindoro around 10 a.m. Tuesday and may move west towards Mindoro Strait, passing near or over the Calamian Islands in the next 12 hours, the State weather bureau said.

Due to its proximity to land, PAGASA said tropical cyclone wind Signal No. 1 may be raised over portions of Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan once the LPA becomes a tropical depression.

Moderate to rough seas with waves reaching 1.2 to 2.8 meters will prevail over the northern, eastern, and southern seaboards of Luzon, western coasts of Occidental Mindoro and Palawan, and coastlines of Visayas and Mindanao.

Fisherfolks and those with small boats were advised to take precaution when venturing out to sea.
