The Philippine Army (PA) joined the commemoration of the 21st Korean War Veterans of the Philippines Memorial Day and the 46th anniversary of the Philippine Expeditionary Force to Korea (PEFTOK) Veteran's Association, Inc. at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City on Wednesday.
Lt. Gen. Cirilito E. Sobejana, commander of the Western Mindanao Command (6th Infantry Division – Kampilan Facebook / MANILA BULLETIN)
Lieutenant General Cirilito Sobejana, PA commanding general, led the wreath-laying ceremony at the Korean War Memorial Pylon in honor of the departed Filipino soldiers who valiantly fought in the 1950 Korean War.
The PEFTOK, composed of five Battalion Combat Teams (BCTs), fought alongside United Nations (UN) forces in South Korea to aid them against invading communist forces.
Sobejana extended his gratitude to the Filipino veterans of the Korean War for their bravery that led to the victorious Battles of Yultong and Eerie Hill, which are considered as among the most outstanding exploits of the PEFTOK.
"We are again given the privilege to honor the deeds of our predecessors, savor their continuing tradition of valor, and celebrate freedom with our South Korean ally," he said.
"To our veterans, your courage earned not only the admiration of many nations but raised the pride of our own. Your triumph in the Battle of Yultong somehow reminds us that we have already been a world-class Army all along," he added.
In the Battle of Yultong, Filipino soldiers from the 10th Battalion Combat Team fought and won against elements of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army 44th Division in the northern part of Yeoncheon county in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea from April 22 to 23, 1951.
Meanwhile, in the Battle of Eerie Hill, Filipino soldiers teamed up with the UN Command Forces to fight against the Chinese People's Volunteer Army at the Eerie Hill -- a military outpost in Ch'orwon in Kangwon province, North Korea -- from March 21 to July 18, 1952.
Sobejana said that the veterans' love for the country, family, way of life, and democracy "will keep the lessons of the Korean War contemporary."
"Against COVID-19, terrorism, or even calamities, our great veterans will remind us to be resilient, and win together with other members of the community of nations," Sobejana said.
Meanwhile, South Korean Ambassador to the Philippines Han Dong-man expressed their nation’s gratitude to the contribution and sacrifices of the Filipino veterans whose service led to the freedom of the Republic of Korea.
"Korea will not enjoy democracy without the contribution and sacrifice of Filipino and Korean veterans. Today, on Remembrance Day, we remember their sacrifice, valor, dedication, devotion, and contribution for the freedom of Korea and the world," he said.
"Han also revealed the message of President Duterte to South Korea President Moon Jae-in, saying the Philippines will "forever stand with Korea to defend freedom."
