5G or the 5th generation mobile network is a new global wireless standard after 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G networks. The technology behind 5G is designed to connect virtually everyone and everything together -- machines, objects, and devices including of course your mobile phones.

Just recently, Huawei has launched the Huawei P40 Series 5G in the Philippines, further highlighting the impending ear of 5G technology here.
While users see 5G as a faster way to connect to the Internet, the technology have more benefits to offer beyond our smartphones. With its unprecedented high-speed connectivity, dependable reliability and extensive capacity, 5G will be the platform for transformation in every industry.
While 5G will have an impact in almost all industries, here are some of the main industries where 5G will have an immediate effect:
Transportation:With real time monitoring via 5G network, the flow of traffic will become more efficient as traffic signals could be automatically changed based on the actual traffic situation. Sensors and cameras connected via the 5G network will monitor traffic patterns and could immediately relay the information to those who need them. This would help drivers save fuel and ordinary passenger save time in commuting.
Just recently, Huawei, the world’s largest telecommunications equipment supplier, has formed an alliance with 18 car companies to accelerate the commercial development of 5G-connected cars in China. This initiative would not only bring driverless cars into the mainstream but also would make head-on collisions and other vehicular accidents a thing of the past as 5G connected cars would know when they are close with each other and then apply necessary measures to avoid accidents.
Healthcare:With 5G networks, doctors and healthcare providers can monitor and check data in real time to improve personalized care to remote patients. Also, with 5G’s high speed connectivity, large files needed for surgeries and other critical situations in hospitals could be transferred in just a matter of seconds giving patients shorter waiting time for treatments.
One industry that would greatly use 5G is telemedicine. Healthcare would be more accessible with the help of this technology. While it is already being done now, it is however limited to consultation and prescription. Ayala Corporation recently launched the HealthNow App to give Filipinos access to healthcare especially in the time of pandemic where movements are restricted, the app gives ordinary people access to health professionals for their health concerns. With 5G this could go further, patients could have access to specialists and get treated even if the doctor is on the other side of the planet using real-time high-quality video connected to IoT medical equipment. While the first telesurgery was done in 2001 when surgeons in New York removed the gallbladder of a patient in France using a remote controlled robotic system, we have not heard much about it after 20 years. With 5G technology patients in rural areas could be treated by specialists from the other side of the globe as if they are just in the same room.
In early 2019, a Chinese surgeon collaborated with Huawei and China Mobile to operate on the brain of a Parkinson's disease patient 3,000 km away using a 5G connection, it was the first time such an operation has taken place in China.
Agriculture:The farming industry all over the world is now adopting new innovations and the 5G technology will further revolutionize it.
Using 5G, farmers can monitor in real time the field conditions and be notified immediately when crops need watering, pesticides, or fertilizer. Farmers will also know when is the best time to harvest the crop using sensors and cameras connected to 5G network. Also, livestock could now be easily tracked and self-driving tractors could be deployed in the field while the farmer is in the comfort of his home sipping coffee.
