Another brother of Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia dies

CEBU CITY—In less than a week, another family member of the Garcias, one of Cebu’s most influential political families, has passed away.

          Marlon Garcia, mayor of Barili town in southern Cebu, died past midnight Sunday in a private hospital in Cebu City.

          The Barili mayor died while the Garcias were still mourning the death of Nelson Garcia, former mayor of Dumanjug town, also in southern Cebu, when news of Marlon’s death came.

          Nelson died last September 1, but the cause of death was not made public. He was laid to rest Saturday.

          Marlon and Nelson were the brothers of Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia and Cebu 3rd District Representative Pablo John Garcia.

          Gwen is the eldest in the brood of eight.

          Their father, Pablo Garcia, was a former Cebu governor and a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.

          The passing of Marlon, 58, was announced by his brother Winston, the former general manager and president of the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS).

          "To lose one brother is painful enough, but to lose another brother in the same week, my heart just cannot take any further. The true fighter that he was, my brother, Marlon has been fighting for his life for the last few weeks,” Winston said in a Facebook post.

          The cause of death was not stated in the announcement, but Nelson was one of the seven mayors in Cebu province to get infected with the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

          “My brother was a loving husband, son, father, grandfather, brother, cousin, uncle, and friend who served his people proudly as Mayor of Barili,” Winston added.
