The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has raised alarm over allegations of maltreatment of the Aeta community in Zambales.

According to reports obtained by the rights commission, the Aetas from San Marcelino, Zambales were subjected to cruel and degrading treatment on August 21. The Aetas, who were suspected to be members of the New People's Army, were reportedly forced by military personnel to eat human waste.
However, 7ID Public Affairs Office Chief Maj. Amado Gutierrez has denied the alleged maltreatment and said that all military operations must espouse the importance of human rights.
CHR Spokesperson Atty. Jacqueline Ann de Guia said they welcome the statement made by Gutierrez for the military to uphold human rights. "The Commission has always reminded members of the armed forces to adhere to the principles of human rights and international humanitarian law," she said.
"We welcome the statement of Maj. Gutierrez and the ongoing investigation currently being conducted by the military to uncover the truth to these allegations," she added.
The CHR will be conducting its own investigation parallel to the ongoing military investigation through its regional office to ensure that there will be impartiality.
