ADVICE TO YOUNG ACTORS: With showbiz work in relaxed mode and one major network closed down, what advice can we offer all the young actors out there whose careers have been suspended in mid-air?
I say, go back to school. Now is the best time for young people in showbiz to pick up their books once again and study.
With time on their hands and calendars wanting in things to do, they can now focus on other worthwhile activities as finishing high school or starting college.
Many of today’s young actors are in that stage of youth when they should be schooling. They take advantage of youth’s prime, between the ages of 14 to 20, when they’re in full bloom, which is a premium in a showbiz career. Technically, those years are also their formative years as students.
This break caused by Covid-19 pandemic can just be the best excuse to resume their education in an academic setting.
Finish school, get a degree. Walk tall and confident.
SCHOOLING IS IMPORTANT: Rising actor Mackoy de Leon has reportedly re-enrolled as an Engineering student. The young actor is also an entrepreneur, running a lugaw store in Manila.
It’s a good thing that despite her busy schedule even long before Covid, Kathryn Bernado has been going to college as a Business Management major.
Other young actors should follow in the example of these two, the likes of Daniel Padilla, James Reid, Enrique Gil, Liza Soberano, Barbie Forteza, Alden Richards, Julia Montes.
NOT EVERY ACTOR IS A DUMB DORA: By getting a degree, finishing college, today’s young actors can help erase a common misconception that people in showbiz are nothing more than airheads, pretty faces with nothing between the ears.
That is a sad commentary on how society tends to look down on actors and people in the entertainment industry in general. They are usually better known for their good looks only, and people tend to limit their perception of actors up to the physical level only.
Little do they know that a lot of actors are just as sensible, as sensitive, as socially conscious, and as intelligent as any Tom, Dick, and Harry down the road.
This thought struck us as we read netizens’ derogatory remarks about actors like Angel Locsin, among others, who, despite the great efforts they put in to make themselves relevant, are continuously being downgraded for being just showbiz.
Wala raw alam ang mga taga-showbiz.
That is, perhaps, the most unfair remark I have read in years. Many of our actors are college graduates, or if not, they have taken it upon themselves to improve their lot and intellectual capacity through reading, learning.
It isn’t fair to summarize all actors as dumb Doras. That is so 1950s when the Dumb Blonde phenomenon became the laughing stock in Hollywood.
IMPROVE THE IMAGE OF ACTORS: By going back to school and finishing their education, young actors can help improve the reputation of Filipino actors in general as a thinking, intelligent breed.
They can follow in the example of accomplished actors as Robert Arevalo, Gloria Diaz, Celeste Legaspi, Vilma Santos, Dina Bonnevie, Kris Aquino, Tessie Tomas, Ricky Davao, Edu Manzano, Ali Sotto, Cherry Pie Picache, Iza Calzado, Enchong Dee, Bibeth Orteza, Dingdong Dantes, Robi Domingo, Janine Gutierrez, Bela Padilla, and so many others who have proven, and continue to prove, that showbiz is also home to the bright, the free and the sensible.
